Another school shooting?

The Mayans might be on to something; the world is coming to an end. The indigenous people were focused on the wrong numbers –12, 21, 12. The numbers many of are trying to crunch Friday are 26, 18 and 8.

Twenty-six people died around 9:00 a.m. Friday in the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting in Newtown, CT, including 20 children and 6 adults. MSNBC reports the body of 20-year-old suspect Adam Lanza of Hoboken, NJ was found inside the school. His mother, Nancy Lanza, was targeted along with students in her kindergarten class. This is the second deadliest school shooting in U.S. history followed by the Virginia Tech massacre in 2007 where 32 people died.

My goodness!!! What has the world come to where people are targeting innocent children? It’s not to say school shootings at colleges, universities, high schools and junior high schools are any less painful to come to terms with, because all acts of violence are hard to stomach.

As an aunt, I’ve picked up my niece from elementary school a number of times when I lived in New York. But I can’t fathom what it would be like for a parent to drop off a child at school to later find out you won’t pick him or her back up from school; furthermore, alive. The timing of this tragedy couldn’t be worse. The parents of those 18 children should be deciding which gift to scratch of their little one’s Christmas list, not deciding which casket of cemetery to bury their child. My heart goes out to those parents, school staff members and the other victims — the children who had to witness the massacre take place in front of their eyes.

Some very sick people in this world have made us realize we aren’t safe anywhere, anymore; shootings have taken place in recent years at places of worship, at gyms, at movie theaters and too often, at schools. I pray the news of such shootings cease at becoming the norm in our society.

Let’s all live better!
