28 years and counting for KOTA Care & Share Food drive

CARE AND SHARE

The KOTA Territory Care and share food drive was started 28 years ago to reduce the number of people in our communities that go without food. It all started when Church Response reached out to our station to start a food drive because its cupboards were running bare.

The first year, all the food collected from the food drive could fit in the trunk of a car. By the second year, the food drive had grown so much it was bringing in more food than much larger Sioux Falls.

Sadly, the needs in 1985 are very similar to the needs today. The Feeding South Dakota Food Pantry served 38,900 people in 2011; this year the pantry has already served 41,000. And during the first three-quarters of this year, Church Response has seen well over 8,300 clients.

The goal for this year’s KOTA Care and Share food drive is 150,000 pounds of food and $80,000. More than 35,000 blue bags full of food are expected to be collected on Saturday.
