New lighted bike path unveiled

It took two years and thousands of dollars from the City of Rapid City and the Rapid City Rush hockey team, but Rapid City’s Light the Night project is now complete.

There are 50 solar lights on the bike path west of Roosevelt Park and I-90. Rapid City police officers say the new lights will help make this bike path safer and more assessable after dark.

Dozens gathered on the bike path Tuesday afternoon to unveil the new solar lights. Officer Ryan Phillips and other officers on the Street Crimes Unit say what was missing were lights. Phillips says the lights are more economical, are flood safe and are environmentally friendly. And now that the sun disappears earlier this time of year, Phillips says the timing couldn’t be more spot on.

“There were no lights here and as you know, this time of year it gets darker at 4:30 p.m., so there’s still plenty of time to enjoy the park,” said Officer Phillips.

He says the lights are charged during the day and could hold a single charge for up to three days. The project is estimated to have cost $312,000 dollars.
