Wounded Knee National Monument

The Wounded Knee Massacre took place here, on South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Reservation on  December 29, 1890.

Some fled the U.S. 7th Calvary Regiment but at least 150 men, women, and children of the Lakota Sioux had been killed and 51 wounded in the massacre.

Today, the bodies of those killed on that day rest at a common grave on a hill overlooking the encampment.
