Sales tax receipts show a recovering economy

Sales tax receipts for 2011 are tallied and what they reveal might be a sign the Rapid City economy is gaining momentum.

The city saw a 6% sales tax receipt growth last year, equaling $21,000. That’s almost 3% higher than the year before. 2011 was such a good year, sales tax receipts increased every month and every month was better than the same month in the previous year.

Some downtown business owners say the news is refreshing and means consumers are regaining their confidence.

“Oh it just shows how vibrant the economy is if sales tax receipts are up 6%, said Rich Bauamann, Owner of Neubauer’s, a jewelry store.

“We really saw it turn around so our September, October, November and December numbers were fantastic,” said Dan Tribby, General of Prairie Edge. “And our January and February is really starting out really good.”

2011 sales tax receipts are the highest Rapid City has seen since 2006.
