Drivers headed east from Sturgis to Rapid City on Interstate 90 may have noticed a new device that mimics a street light. This new sensor near exit 37 is used to track truck drivers and shorten the line at weigh stations.
Commercial vehicles, fitted with a transponder, can drive past the weigh station. A scale and camera communicates the driver’s registration, truck number and even the weight the driver is carrying.
Although the transponder is an inexpensive device, some truck drivers say they won’t convert.
“You got to be kept current you know as far as they have to know your registration is up to snuff,” said Mike Clock, a truck driver with Quality Transportation. “They’re going to know it when you are coming down the road.”
Starting Wednesday, the sensors should be fully installed and ready for use.
