It’s not only a worker shortage but a drug shortage that’s becoming a growing concern here in KOTA Territory. Obtaining prescription drugs has been a problem for patients and pharmacists in Rapid City for the last year and a half.
Medicap Pharmacist Jo Prang says the shortage stems from the international market, companies discontinuing drugs and a lack of raw materials. Prang says those factors are causing a backlog of orders making it hard for pharmacies to catch up.
“People have been going from pharmacy to pharmacy depending on who gets a shipment and when,” said Prang. ” So it’s been very difficult to maintain a steady inventory and you have to account for those drugs.”
Prang says the most difficult prescriptions to fill are those for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
