It’s a very difficult time for many ranchers in KOTA Territory. As the demand for bison meat grows so does their concerns.
The National Bison Association is pushing ranchers to produce more buffaloes to off set high demands of bison meat.
According to the National Bison Association, demand has doubled within the last five years in comparison to available supply, leaving ranchers like Kevin MacRitchie to explore other ways to expand his herd size.
“I think we are finding fewer producers that are raising larger herds and we are starting to see more and more people wanting to get in to calf productions for those that raise meat, ” says MacRitchie, “and that seems to be a big trend right now.”
MacRitchie says despite demand 99 percent of local ranchers are conducting genetic tests to ensure consumers are provided with the best quality meat.
